Navigate the Holiday Season

…and still keep on writing

The leaves are turning brown, the need for scarves and bobble hats is increasing and before you know it, the holidays are upon us. The summer might be over, but there is no need for doom and gloom as some of the best days in the calendar are yet to come. Which is your favourite; Bonfire Night in the UK, or Thanksgiving in the US?

Halloween, October 31st

This popular American holiday is just around the corner, so if you don’t know what you are going to wear, you’d better get cracking! Get the kids ready for Trick or Treating, candy at the ready, and be prepared for spooky antics. If you’re not as interested in Halloween as Claire from Modern Family is, hide away in the house and see if you can start writing a murder mystery or scary short story. That is if you’re doorbell doesn’t keep ringing… halloween

Bonfire Night, November 5th, UK

This British tradition isn’t a holiday, but it is a reminder of previous times gone by. As a reaction to the lack of religious freedom for Catholics in England in the early 1600s, a small group decided to blow up the Houses of Parliament with gunpowder. The plot did not succeed and Guy Fawkes, who was caught with the gunpowder in the basement, was tortured and executed.  In remembrance of the attempt, there is a rhyme “Remember remember the fifth of November; gunpowder, treason and plot”. Even today, the monarch only enters the Houses of Parliament once a year. Every year on November 5th, there are fireworks displays and bonfires bringing the community together.

Thanksgiving, November 23rd

Traditionally the start of the “holiday season” in the US, Thanksgiving is different from Christmas in that it doesn’t revolve around the giving of gifts. Every fourth Thursday of November, spend quality time with your family and celebrate everything that you are thankful for.
