17 New Year’s resolutions for writers

Happy new year writers! A new year means new year’s resolutions. Did you already make them up? They might give you inspiration and boost your creativity. As a writer, you might have some resolutions that come back every year. We got you 17 ideas that might help you.

1. This is probably the most common new year’s resolution among writers and might be the most important one: make more time for writing. And really do it this year!

2. Self-edit while writing. When you edit while you write, it can save you a lot of time afterwards. Most of the spelling is already correct and you don’t have to divide your text in paragraphs anymore.

3. Pay more attention to titles and headlines. Titles and headlines determine if people are going to read your text or not – it is worth some effort.

4. Start writing before the deadline is almost there. Most of us will recognize this: we only start to work hard when the deadline is almost there. Try to finish your writing a few days before the deadline, it will save you a lot of stress.

5. Exercise. A healthy body is a healthy mind. Exercising will improve your writing. And being in shape is a nice extra.

6. Read more. Reading is exercising for the mind. And it will give you inspiration.

7. Finish what you started. You probably started 20 different writing ideas enthusiastically this year and never finished. In 2017 you are going to finish everything you started. And if it is not worth finishing, don’t start with it.

8. Backup your data. The most frustrating thing is a laptop with a dying battery while being in a writer’s flow, and losing the most brilliant piece of writing you ever created. Make it a habit, back up your work.

9. Organize your files. It might take some time to clean up your computer but it will make your life a lot easier and your work flow faster.

10. Get more sleep. This works the same as exercising. A rested mind equals a power writer.

11. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Do not become upset when you do not manage to keep up with your new year’s resolutions. Small improvements are also improvements.

12. Start self-publishing. People from all over the world might like to read your work. Just create a Peecho account and start to sell your work as prints on demand  books or magazines without any costs.

13. Stop comparing yourself to others. It is about what makes you happy. More sales do not always mean more happiness

14. Try writing another genre. It does not have to be good, you just have to try and get out of your comfort zone. It will give you new ideas.

15. Work on your online presence. You can’t live without it these days. And it is never too late to start.

16. Get in touch with other writers. It will inspire you and they might have tips for you on writing and everything that comes with it.

17. Be nice, always be nice to the people around you. Even though you are frustrated because you are suffering from writer’s block. By doing this, it will be a great 2017 for you and everyone around you!
