A new year means a fresh start. 366 days (2016 is a leap year!) to accomplish what you always wanted to accomplish. 2016 will be a great year for creatives and the earlier you start, the more chance of success you have. We set out some tips to get motivated and inspired to create beautiful, unique content!

1. Set a goal

Many people can work faster when they know what their goal is. The main goal might be finishing your book, magazine or photograph collection. For your work routine, this goal might be too global. That’s why it can be useful to set sub goals. Aim at finishing your first chapter, column or photograph for example.

2. Set a deadline

Now that you know what your goal and sub goals are, you can set yourself deadlines. Make a draft of your first column or book in the first week, edit it in the second week and make sure it is finished in the third week. Put the deadlines in a calendar and connect the deadlines to rewards. Treat yourself with a nice piece of chocolate pie when you finished the editing of the first six photographs of your collection for example.

3. No inspiration? Keep on creating!

Every creative knows the feeling of not having any inspiration. The worst thing you can do in a situation like this is stop working. It helps when you just start typing sentences or shooting photographs. New ideas will come up while you are busy creating, you can always delete everything that appears to be unuseful.

4. Choose themes you are passionate about

When you choose themes to write about or make photographs of that you are passionate about, it will be more fun to work on your project. And when something is more fun, it is easier to work on it and it will go faster. Also, when you are passionate about what you are creating, it will show in your work.

5. Get in touch with strangers

Start a conversation with a neighbour you never talked to or the person sitting next to you in the bus. Getting in touch with new people can be very inspiring and it can make new ideas pop into your mind. Maybe they have the key to your new story or maybe they know someone who can help you edit your work.

6. Take care of yourself and your environment

Make sure your house and working space is clean. This way, you will not be distracted and it will make you more productive. Don’t forget to take care of yourself too. Eat your vegetables and exercise: a healthy body leads to a healthy mind.

7. Get out of your comfort zone

Do things you always wanted to do but never dared. Taking risks will make you feel like achieving victories. Go travel on your own, practice extreme sports or go to a party you don’t know many people. The new experiences can inspire you in your creative process and the victorious feeling will motivate you to finish your project. You can do it!

8. Don’t make excuses

Make appointments with yourself and keep them. Don’t cancel a writing or photography date with yourself. Stick to your schedule and you will get closer to your goal every day.

9. Accept help

There are things you can’t do by yourself: accept that. It’s alright to ask a friend or to hire someone to edit your manuscript or photographs. Two heads are better than one.

10. Finish what you start

While you are writing a column or chapter, the idea to start over might cross your mind. Always finish what you started. Maybe it’s not exactly what you intended to create, but you can always edit it and it might inspire you for the real thing.
